Aero Space Aviation medicine

Aviation medicine, also called flight medicine or aerospace medicine, is a preventive or occupational medicine in which the patients/subjects are pilots, aircrews, or persons involved in spaceflight The specialty strives to treat or prevent conditions to which aircrews are particularly susceptible, applies medical knowledge to the human factors in aviation and is thus a critical component of aviation safety.  A military practitioner of aviation medicine may be called a flight surgeon and a civilian practitioner is an aviation medical examiner.

Overview of Aero Space Medicine

Broadly defined, this subdiscipline endeavors to discover and prevent various adverse physiological responses to hostile biologic and physical stresses encountered in the aerospaceenvironment. Problems range from life support measures for astronauts to recognizing an ear block in an infant traveling on an airliner with elevated cabin pressure altitude. Aeromedical certification of pilots, aircrew and patients is also part of Aviation Medicine. A final subdivision is the AeroMedical Transportation Specially. These military and civilian specialists are concerned with protecting aircrew and patients who are transported by AirEvac aircraft (helicopters or fixed-wing airplanes).

Atmospheric physics potentially affect all air travelers regardless of the aircraft.  As humans ascend through the first 9100–18,300 m (30,000–40,000 ft), temperature decreases linearly at an average rate of 2°C (3.6°F) per 305 m (1000 ft). If sea-level temperature is 16°C (60°F), the outside air temperature is approximately −57°C (−70°F) at 10,700 m (35,000 ft). Pressure and humidity also decline, and aircrew are exposed to radiation, vibration and acceleration forces (the latter are also known as "g" forces). Aircraft life support systems such as oxygen, heat and pressurization are the first line of defense against most of the hostile aerospace environment. Higher performance aircraft will provide more sophisticated life support equipment such as "G-suits" to help the body resist acceleration, and pressure breathing apparatus or ejection seats or other escape equipment.

Every factor contributing to a safe flight has a failure rate. The crew of an aircraft is no different. Aviation medicine aims to keep this rate in the humans involved equal to or below a specified risk level. This standard of risk is also applied to airframe, avionics and systems associated with flights.

AeroMedical examinations aim at screening for elevation in risk of sudden incapacitation, such as a tendency towards myocardial infarction (heart attacks), epilepsy or the presence of metabolic conditions diabetes, etc. which may lead to hazardous condition at altitude. The goal of the AeroMedical Examination is to protect the life and health of pilots and passengers by making reasonable medical assurance that an individual is fit to fly.  Other screened conditions such as colour blindness can prevent a person from flying because of an inability to perform a function that is necessary. In this case to tell green from red. These specialized medical exams consist of physical examinations performed by an Aviation Medical Examiner or a military Flight Surgeon, doctors trained to screen potential aircrew for identifiable medical conditions that could lead to problems while performing airborne duties. In addition, this unique population of aircrews is a high-risk group for several diseases and harmful conditions due to irregular work shifts with irregular sleeping and irregular meals (usually carbonated drinks and high energy snacks) and work-related stress.

Mission

“Aero Space Aviation will strive for national and international recognition a responsible for training and credentialling specialists in aerospace medicine, and the body responsible for maintaining the high standards of aerospace medicine practised by its Fellows and Members.”

Objectives

The objectives of the Aero Space Aviation Medicine are:

  1. • to educate and train the next generation of specialists in aerospace medicine

  2. • to maintain professional standards and ethics among specialists in aerospace medicine through continuing professional development and other activities;

  3. • to promote the study of the science and art of aerospace medicine;

  4. • to increase the evidence and knowledge on which the practice of aerospace medicine as a recognised medical specialty is based, through research and dissemination of new knowledge and innovation within the profession and the community;

  5. • to seek improved health and safety for all people who venture into the aerospace environment for work or for travel, by developing and advocating health and safety policy in partnership with consumers and regulators; and

  6. • to support and develop specialists in aerospace medicine as clinicians, teachers, and researchers.

Cornerstone Activities

In striving for these objectives, the Aero Space Aviation Medicine will undertake the following activities:

  1. • Define the competencies of a specialist in aerospace medicine,

  2. • Recognise through Fellowship those who meet the competencies of a specialist in aerospace medicine;

  3. • Provide mentoring for aviation medicine practitioners who aspire to a career in aerospace medicine;

  4. • Define Continuing Professional Development requirements to maintain currency in aerospace medicine; and

  5. • Pursue recognition of aerospace medicine as a medical specialty in Australasia.

The Badge

The College badge contains the following elements:

  1. •  the light blue of the sky;

  2. • the darker blue of space;

  3. • the orange of the sun;

  4. • the Southern Cross visible from the Southern Hemisphere;

  5. • the staff of Asklepios, with wings and encircled by aviation and space vehicles to emphasise the aerospace nature of our medical practice; and

  6. • the Vitruvian Man, symbolising the delicate balance of physiology in the aerospace environment.

The College training programme will facilitate supervised progression through defined competencies in aerospace medicine, with regular summative and formative assessments over a four year period.

The training programme is flexible, and tailored to accommodate individuals’ circumstances.  It is expected that a Trainee working in a setting with a reasonable exposure to aerospace medicine could meet the competencies and assessments from any location in Australasia.

More details on the training programme to follow.

ASM PAUL says 'Job well done Mars' the Mars Curiosity Team

The Center head ASM BINEEH A PAUL for Space Medicine at AAA/ASA College of Medicine congratulates the men and women at space and its contractors who have tirelessly worked for years in making the Mars Curiosity mission a success. We have enjoyed following this mission leading up to the landing and the first images sent back to Earth, but we are even more excited about the scientific data and imagery that it will capture in the future.

Introducing the AAA/ASA Space Medicine Track

The new Space Medicine Track at AAA/ASA offers elective courses to medical students throughout all four years of medical school. The introduction of this Track makes BCM the first institution in the world to offer this program. The first students recognized as having completed the Space Medicine Track graduated in May 2012.

The Aero Space Aviation Medicine will offer positions for Fellows, Associate Fellows, and Trainees.

Fellows are medical practitioners who have met the requirements of the College for Fellowship, are recognised as specialists in aerospace medicine, and who meet the ongoing requirements of Continuing Professional Development.

Associate Fellows are medical practitioners with expertise in a clinical discipline, typically at the level of Fellowship, and who regularly provide expert advice in support of the medical management and aeromedical disposition of aircrew, or in the field of aeromedical retrieval.  Associate Fellows have developed a working knowledge of the practice of aerospace medicine within the narrow scope of their primary clinical discipline, and support specialists in aerospace medicine from the perspective of their primary specialty.

Trainees are medical practitioners who are enrolled in the College training programme, and who aspire to Fellowship of the College and recognition as a specialist in aerospace medicine.  Trainees must be enrolled in (or have completed) post-graduate study in aerospace medicine at the level of a Diploma or Master’s degree from an approved institution.

Applications.  Applications for Foundation Fellowship (‘grandfathering’) are now CLOSED.  Prospective applicants who want to be credentialled as specialists in aerospace medicine should contact fellowship@aerospacemedicine.org to discuss.

Applications for Associate Fellowship remain open. Please complete and submit the application below.
